Schools And Education In Central America

In relation to the two American continents, not much information is known on the expanse of land found right inside the largest ocean in the world, and the sea of the Caribbeans. Here is why you learn more about things going on in these areas.

Schooling Abroad- Expensive Choices

For people who do not stay in countries where the most celebrated universities are, for instance, United States, there is always that pressure to school there. Everybody wants to be on the American continent. It is all well and good until these people only see the two American continents as the States and then the Great Canada, forgetting the other countries in the space in-between the southern and northern continents called Central America.

When America is mentioned, people forget that North America and Southern America are continents in which reside several countries. The countries forgotten in the mix mainly are the ones who are found in the sea that separates both continents given the title ‘Central America.’ In this space resides seven countries which are all sovereign states. Some people simply think that all these countries are either capital cities of Brazil or located somewhere in Argentina but no. These are countries on their own, located further down from the United States but obscured from the minds of people because of the massiveness in size and stature of the great Canada and United States Of America. The countries found in that stretch of land are:

  1.  Costa Rica
  2.  Belize
  3.  Panama
  4.  El Salvador
  5.  Nicaragua
  6.  Honduras
  7.  Guatemala

These countries are seen to be developing countries and so may not attract as many tourists as their northern and southern counterparts, however, the people who do manage to go there come back with great reviews about how relaxed and beautiful the place is. With respect to education, however, there happens to be a disparity between the schools established there and the level of literacy.

The Central Americas and Education

According to researched facts, some of these countries gave some of the best universities in the region, but still face a poor adult literacy level. If they are ranked from most literate to least literate, Nicaragua is trailing the group with an adult literacy level of about 63.4%, with Guatemala following somewhat closely with 66.6% literate adults. The other countries like Honduras, Belize and El Salvador can boast of adult literacy levels around 70%. The countries with the highest levels of adult literacy in the area are Costa Rica and Panama which can boast of literacy levels in the 90th percentile.

Regardless of the poor literacy rates amongst their adults, it is quite amusing to find out that some of the countries are home to some ground breaking universities. The Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala is currently the holder of the highest enrollment in the world, having over a hundred thousand students, yet the country still faces a relatively lower level of adult literacy.

Schooling in these areas is just like in many others. For example, in El Salvador, schooling starts from the primary level, ensuring that the young ones have the basic knowledge that they need to be able to compete on the world stage. After the primary level, the secondary level follows, ending at grade 12. After the grade 12, students can apply to study in their universities. Unfortunately even with all this, there is still a lack of the development and utilization of the human resource. Due to the overflowing nature of vocational schools in the area which offer a study of up to 3 years, people mostly drop out of schools and opt for the vocational route. It is all well and good except up to 50% of students drop out at the primary school level and a great number of people of school going age are neither studying nor working. Thus, they are not bettering themselves and so they are adding to the high rate of illiteracy. This is rather an unfortunate reality of several of the schools in that region.

Nicaragua as a country has its own challenges when it comes to educating its future generations. Like many of the other countries, schooling has three phases: Primary, lower and higher secondary phase. In Nicaragua, primary school is compulsory for all students of school going age. The students are asked to go to school free of charge, but their primary education lasts 6 years. Lower secondary school is the umbrella name for students in grade 7 to grade 9, and higher secondary schools. The secondary level of education is also mandatory and free. Children get the opportunity to study in shifts so that they can be Of help to their families. This would have been enough to educate the country except the fact that Nicaraguan schools have very low technological advancement therefore, although many students are being educated, they are in truth given subpar education because that is what is available. This goes to say that although some of these countries may have good enough universities, the foundation laid is not strong enough because there is no interest or investment in schooling.

Guatemala is no better. The primary education is insisted upon, like with other countries, but statistics show that only 75% of the students make it to the end of primary school. Many just drop out mid way, creating a stress on the country’s lack of human capital. Since there is a correlation between the educational system of a country, it’s development of the Human Resources, it is obvious that the country is facing a difficulty in developing and getting to the standard of the first world countries.

Education is of the essence if you want your country to develop, there is the necessity that you educate your people. Unfortunately, there is a lot of things that can halt a country’s effort to educate its youth, leading to a halt in their own development process. This is the story of those who live in the areas known as Central America. With hope, something can be done about it, leading to their development.
